The Colchagua Wine Association members celebrated in style the Carménère grape

For the first time, the Colchagua Wine Association members held the “Carménère Festivities”, celebrating in style this emblematic variety which was rediscovered in Chile 20 years ago and which shines even brighter in Colchagua, a valley which runs from the ocean to the mountains. This valley is also known for a great variety of other grapes used for winemaking.

Santiago, November 2017 – More than 300 people assisted the party held at Club de la Unión in Santiago, November 24, the day in which this emblematic grape is celebrated internationally. This grape has given Chile many wines of outstanding quality. The celebration included the biggest offer of the best Carménères from the wineries which belong to the Colchagua Wine Association, including a spectacular Sparkling Carménère and several icon wines from the region.

The high point of the night was the presence of Jean Michel Boursiquot, the French man who rediscovered the Carménère grape variety in 1994, who, together with the rest of the participants from the Colchagua Wine Association, press and general public enjoyed the Carménère wine tastings and also the enthusiastic dancing and the Metropoli band which played until late hours of the night.

“In Chile we don’t just like wine, we love it, and, particularly the wine coming from our valley. Colchagua produces 50% of the national production of Carménère and 40% of the global production of this variety. Across the length and breadth of our valley, we can find some of the most outstanding and awarded Carménères in the world. From the foothills of the Cordillera in Los Lingues, passing through Apalta and then Marchigue which is 40 km away from the ocean, Colchagua stands out for its great growing conditions due to important factors such as orientation of the vineyards, very scarce humidity, excellent soils and clearly marked seasonal changes”, commented Claudio Naranjo, president of the Colchagua Wine Association.

The Colchagua Wine Association is made up of 17 wineries with one a common interest: the promotion, publicity and education of the Appellation of Origin of the Colchagua Valley. The association is made up of the following cellars: Apaltagua, Bisquertt, Casa Silva, Encierra, Escondida, Koyle, Lapostolle, Los Vascos, Luis Felipe Edwards, Montes, MontGras, Neyén, Polkura, Santa Cruz, Siegel, Ventisquero and Viu Manent.
